On December 8th 2015 the Yorkey family's whole life was turned upside down. Shelby brought 2 1/2 year old Kyla in to the doctor for what she thought was just a cold. Kyla had a bad cough and fever, and started to look really pale with low energy. At first the doctor thought the same thing, but at the last minute she decided to do a quick blood draw since Kyla was so pale. After the draw the doctor came back and told Shelby that Kyla's red blood count was extremely low (below blood transfusion level, which it NOT GOOD!).
Because Leukemia was the first thing that came to the doctor's mind, Kyla was rushed to UC Davis Children's Hospital that night. Once she arrived at UC Davis, Kyla received 3 blood transfusions and had bone marrow drawn to determine if she actually did have Leukemia. The tests confirmed that it was in fact "ALL" (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) and they began treatment. She underwent surgery and a port was inserted in to her chest where she now receives blood transfusions, chemo, and has blood drawn. Since then she has also undergone LP (Lumbar Puncture) procedures to test her spinal fluid and to begin chemo through her central nervous system.
Kyla began phase 1 of her 2 1/2 year chemo treatment plan. Kyla was 2 years 5 months old at the time of her diagnoses . The Yorkie’s there 5 month old daughter Kenzie stayed in Kyla’s hospital room with her until released 2 weeks later. Kyla’s oncologist and hematology team wanted them to stay in Sacramento and not return home during Kyla’s intensive chemo treatments so they would be close to them and to the hospital. They made a home in Sacramento for 2 months and did not return home to Lake Tahoe until February 2016.
Since then Kyla has continued her Chemo treatment, and recently celebrated her 4th birthday.
August, 11th 2017, Her mother Shelby shares Kyla’s progress.
“20 something Lumbar Punctures down, 2 more to go! Kyla has 6 more months of treatment and then she will be chemo free!! She is growing into such a strong little lady with the sweetest demeanor and the most amazing imagination. And her sidekick, Kenzie, is constantly cracking us up with her silly ways and she always stands right by Kyla's side cheering her on through every though time....and every fun time. She pretty much always stands right by Kyla . They remind me to live for today and love even harder!” The family now focus’s on healing there bodies with high quality food making an everyday effort to reduce the amount of toxins they encounter on a daily basis. “We are doing everything we can to make sure Kyla thrives through her cancer treatments and continues to thrive through life, and it is helping our entire family thrive as well.”
Though there is no way to estimate the extent of Kyla's medical expenses. The average cost of childhood "ALL" treatment alone can range from $55,000-$160,000 according to the US National Library of Medicine article found here.
